‘Sunday Streets Missoula’ celebration to be festival without traffic downtown

Dancing in the streets will break out on Higgins Avenue in just one week.

On Sunday, Sept. 12, downtown’s main drag shuts down to cars from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. for a "Sunday Streets Missoula" celebration. On tap? Spinning on the bridge, street chalk art, "putt putt golf," a foot race and more.

Saturday, some strollers downtown liked the idea of a city center blocked to automobiles and open to fun.

"I just think it’s a very creative idea," said Cameron Daly, who was walking with friends to the farmers and people’s markets and described the event as "wicked."

Higgins Avenue will be closed off to cars from Circle Square to the north end of Fifth Street, according to http://www.sundaystreetsmissoula.org. Broadway and Fifth Street will remain open, but Jonah Cardwell wondered if cars and trucks might have some trouble with the closures.
