Rancher’s code fends off deficit – Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer

Montana is making national headlines lately, and for a very proud reason: We are one of only two states in America operating without a deficit.

The state of Montana has balanced its checkbook five years in a row with no tax increases, no cuts to education or other essential services, and with $327 million in cold hard cash left in the bank. The Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, FOXNews, MSNBC and CNN (among others) have all taken notice, describing our work as a national example of fiscal discipline.

Schweitzer: Farming profits, mining could help boost state budget outlook

Surging farm profits could reboot Montana’s economy, Gov. Brian Schweitzer said Wednesday, attempting to discredit dark forecasts for the state budget.

Grain and cattle prices are strong and Montana’s wheat harvest could be the biggest on record, Schweitzer told a small gathering of mostly Democrats at Montana State University Billings. With money in hand, those farmers could give Main Street an economic shot in the arm.

"We’ve got the biggest wheat crop and the best prices in history," Schweitzer said, adding that new trucks would soon be disappearing from car lots as farm profits come in.
