Montana State University No. 1 in recruiting bright Montana students – Chemistry, history, media arts see spike in enrollment at University of Montana

The Grizzlies may have bragging rights in football, but the Bobcats are kicking it when it comes to recruiting Montana’s best and brightest students.

The trend has been true for more than a decade, but was highlighted recently in a Missoulian report, headlined, "Most of Montana’s brightest high-schoolers head to MSU, out of state."

Number-crunchers at the Montana State University and the state higher education office in Helena confirmed the latest statistics.

Chemistry, history, media arts see spike in enrollment at University of Montana

The popular CBS television series "Crime Scene Investigation" is one of Tanna Gengreau’s favorite shows.

"I just watch reruns, but I love it," said the 18-year-old University of Montana student.

It’s also one of the reasons the Butte native chose chemistry as her major.

"There’s a forensic option," she said. "I could get into the crime lab. I want to trace elements and work with DNA. I want to help out with crimes and stuff, but not be in the field."

Student interest in three programs at UM has spiked more than 60 percent above last year’s enrollment levels. Based on applicant numbers, students are flocking to chemistry, history and media arts.

"When you have something above 50 percent growth (from the previous year), we watch that," said Jed Liston, vice president of Enrollment Services. "We pay close attention."
