Shelby, Montana shines for centennial milestone

It was an inauspicious start — builders forging across the prairie toward Marias Pass tossed off a boxcar at the crossroads of the Montana Central and Great Northern railways and called it a train station.

A general manager for the railroad, Peter P. Shelby had little regard for his namesake, reportedly saying, "That mudhole, God-forsaken place will never amount to a damn."

While Peter Shelby may have had little faith, the town of Shelby has survived a century of drought, the Great Depression, boxing bouts, oil booms and busts, expanding farms and shrinking schools only to thrive, thanks to an aggressive team of town boosters.

Unlike many of its neighbors, Shelby’s population has grown by 10 percent in the last decade to approximately 3,600 people.
