Kayaking officials say Missoula competition made big $plash

While competitors battled for a spot on the U.S. Freestyle Kayak Team last week at Brennan’s Wave, Missoula earned a spot at the epicenter of the sport.

The three-day competition and team trials at Caras Park were such a resounding success that those at the highest levels of kayaking’s national governing body are already talking about including Missoula in the national competition circuit next year.

"We really didn’t know what to expect with the Missoula event. We didn’t really have a sense for Caras Park and downtown Missoula, but it all played out exactly as it was pitched to us," said Risa Shimoda, chairwoman of the U.S. Freestyle Kayak Committee. "The venue was incredible and the whole town stepped forward to welcome the athletes and the event.
