Why Funding University Innovation Matters

An article in the June 27 New York Times Sunday Business section ("The Idea Incubator Goes to Campus")http://matr.net/article-39937.html highlighted a proposal I wrote for the Obama administration’s 2011 federal budget designed to accelerate the movement of innovative research from university campuses to the marketplace.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) budget proposal calls for $12 million a year http://matr.net/article-39249.html to establish several university proof-of-concept programs — "Innovation Ecosystems"–in the hope that ultimately academic institutions everywhere can better assist their faculty and students to become successful entrepreneurs.
