Magnificent Balloons Let You Soar Over the Bitterroot Valley of Montana – Mountain Butterfly

Mountain Butterfly, a Stevensville-based company that offers hot air balloon rides, sailed over the community Saturday morning at the start of Western Heritage Days. It was the maiden voyage for the company’s new balloon that carries from 8 to 10 people.

The new balloon was made in Spain. The company has another being shipped from Florida that can carry a few more people. They have a smaller balloon in the fleet that carries only two passengers.

The owner of Mountain Butterfly, Michael Reese, has piloted balloons since 1982. He has flown in Napa Valley, Lake Tahoe and Jackson Hole over the years. The company offers valley flights, cross mountain flights, high altitude and long distance flights as well.

Flights cost $180 per person up to eight people. Nine or more people on a flight reduces the cost to $150 per person. Anyone interested in a flight may call for reservations at 406-777-3858 or 406-777-0520. Flights are dependent upon weather and wind conditions at the time.

The winds have welcomed you with softness,

The sun has greeted you with it’s warm hands,

You have flown so high and so well,

That God has joined you in laughter,

And set you back gently into

The loving arms of Mother Earth.

— Anon, known as ‘The Balloonists Prayer,’ believed to have been adapted from an old Irish sailors’ prayer.
