Three questions for Ray Kurzweil

The scope of Ray Kurzweil’s endeavors and depth of his thinking elicits comparisons to Thomas Edison. Like the "Wizard of Menlo Park," he’s a prolific inventor and serial entrepreneur. He’s also an author, futurist and educator.

Kurzweil, 62, is credited with groundbreaking work in artificial intelligence, optical character recognition, text-to-speech technology, reading machines for the blind, and electronic music synthesizers.

He’s the founder and chief executive of Kurzweil Technologies Inc., an incubator for a litany of businesses including Kurzweil Applied Intelligence, Kurzweil Music Systems, Kurzweil Computer Products and FatKat, which applies pattern-recognition techniques to financial markets.

Kurzweil, who lives in Newton, Mass., responded to three questions from The Chronicle about what these ideas could mean for the future of business, technology and humankind.
