A new tactic for creating jobs in Michigan: ‘Economic gardening’ instead of ‘Economic hunting’

Hunting season is mostly over and it’s time to start cultivating the garden.

Likewise, some say it’s time for Michigan to focus on "economic gardening."

Economic development has long been viewed primarily as "economic hunting"– an attempt to create jobs by recruiting new businesses to the state.

State and local officials often pursue big game: auto plants and other operations that promise to employ thousands of workers.

But business experts say economic gardening — helping local businesses grow — could provide a richer, more stable source of jobs for the state.
