Kirby: Getting nowhere fast in Montana – "Safe and Prudent"

When I tell people that I got a speeding ticket in Montana last week, the response falls into two categories:

A. "Like that’s news."

B. "I thought Montana didn’t have a speed limit."

For the record, Montana has always had a speed limit. Until 1999, the limit was "reasonable and prudent," meaning that you couldn’t drive any faster than your vehicle could hold the road under existing conditions.

Example: It would be unreasonable and imprudent to land the space shuttle on any Montana highway with more than a 25 percent grade and covered in snow and bison.
