Governor Schweitzer: Montana tourism remains strong, despite recession. Montana sees more and more geotourists

Montana’s tourism industry has continued to boom amid the bust of a global recession, and Gov. Brian Schweitzer said Thursday that he’s looking to travel businesses to help keep his state in the black.

But Schweitzer, addressing Montana’s annual conference on tourism, also warned of tight fiscal times ahead, predicting budget cuts of perhaps $200 million during the next legislative session.

The tourism industry runs neck-and-neck with agriculture as the second largest economic engine in the state, he said, trailing only medical services. So it is perhaps not surprising that Schweitzer used the tourism forum to discuss broader state fiscal issues.

Montana’s tourists are turning more than a little bit green, and it’s not just their envy of those of us privileged to live full time under the Big Sky.

"We have geotravelers going all over the state," said Norma Nickerson. "That’s who is coming here."
