Positive Systems Awarded Upper Yellowstone River Project

The Park Conservation District and the Montana Department of the Natural Resources and Conservation recently awarded Positive Systems, Inc. with a project that entails providing historical and topographical mapping of the upper Yellowstone River. The project is being undertaken in support of the Governor’s Upper Yellowstone River Task Force.

Established in November of 1997, the Task Force was created to provide a forum for the discussion of issues that effect the Upper Yellowstone River Basin. In particular, to bring together landowners, sportsmen, and sportswomen, and community leaders to develop a shared understanding of the issues and competing values and uses that impact the upper Yellowstone River.

The maps produced by this project will be used to determine changes in the historic river channel and record historic changes to vegetation and wildlife habitat along the river’s bank. The project encompasses 80 miles of the river channel and flood plain, located between Gardiner and Springdale, Montana and is slated for completion on August 15, 2002.

Founded in 1990, Positive Systems is a Whitefish based firm that develops and markets software for processing aerial photos and satellite images into a variety of mapping products. Utilizing their own product, DIME® Software, Positive Systems will process the historic Yellowstone River photos in a manner allowing the Task Force researchers to map a variety of river channel features as well as to evaluate historic channel changes.
