Montana Superintendent of Public Instruction Denise Juneau Announces Funds Available for Local 21st Century Community Learning Centers

Montana Superintendent of Public Instruction Denise Juneau is seeking applicants for the
21st Century Community Learning Center (CCLC) http://opi.mt.gov/pdf/21stCentury/09IntentApply.pdf program, which provides federal funds to support high-quality programs for academic and enrichment activities for students when school is not in session. Approximately 88 community sites and 14,000 students across Montana currently benefit from Community Learning Center programs—that’s up from 9,000 students in 2004.

“The centers help young people develop skills for living and working in the global economy such as working productively in teams, assuming personal responsibility, problem solving, communication with others and making healthy life choices,” said Juneau. “It’s a great opportunity to help Montana students better prepare to compete and excel.”

The 21st Century Community Learning Centers Program http://opi.mt.gov/pdf/21stCentury/09IntentApply.pdf is a limited competitive grant program open to all public or private agencies that serve students in any grade level between pre-K and 12, and are from low-income families or attend a school where 40 percent of the receive free or reduced price meals. The families of the students must also be served through the community learning center.

“These centers can provide a wholesome, family-oriented environment in the community before and after school hours and help keep kids safe and off the streets,” said Juneau.

The application deadline is April 30, 2010.
