Behind the scenes where federal labs facilitate tech transfer

It’s a big mission: promote and facilitate the rapid movement of federal laboratory research results and technologies into the mainstream of the U.S. economy. And with over 300 members participating, the Federal Laboratory Consortium for Technology Transfer (FLC) acts somewhat like a United Nations, facilitating technical cooperation between the federal laboratories and America’s large and small businesses, academia, state and local governments, and federal agencies.

Funded by the United States government, the United States’ federal labs represent a significant national asset and centers of excellence for many disciplines of science and technology. “We provide the forum for members to develop strategies and opportunities to link what is happening in the labs to the marketplace,” says Dr. J. Scott Deiter, FLC chairman. “Our membership with NASVF is important, as we see this as a partnership opportunity from promoting each other’s organizations and through the exchange of ideas.”

Strictly non-commercial, the 18 federal departments and agencies and several hundred federal labs are among the best-equipped and staffed research institutions in the world. They rely on licensing, cooperative agreements and other protocols to fulfill their mission.
