High school writing assessment aims to improve Montana students, teachers

Whatever you may think of the late comedian George Carlin, he was right about one thing.

"Our thoughts," he once said, "are only as good as the quality of our language."

For 10 years now, Montana public school students have been learning just how poignant an idea that is.

On Thursday, nearly 100 Missoula-area teachers, representing all grade levels and fields of study, sat in studious silence in the ballroom of the Hilton Garden Inn to grade the writing skills of thousands of Montana high school juniors.
