Montana’s grasslands considered for protection

The Northern Montana prairie contains some of the largest unplowed areas of grasslands in the world and some of the best habitat regions in all the Great Plains.

The Obama administration is exploring whether to exercise its authority to protect the Northern Montana prairie and millions of other pristine acres across the western United States — an idea that has Republican lawmakers from the region upset that it would wrest land away from those who want to use it for ranching, recreation, timber harvest and energy development.

The list includes the Northern Montana prairie, which the report describes as containing "some of the largest unplowed areas of grasslands in the world and some of the best habitat regions in all the Great Plains." It goes on to say that the nation is losing its grasslands at "alarming rates" and this cross-boundary (with Canada) swath of land would be "an opportunity to restore prairie wildlife and the possibility of establishing a new national bison range."
