Starting as early as elementary level, schools should do more to address career options

On Monday he was a police officer, on Tuesday he was a brain surgeon and on Friday he was an astronaut.

Seven-year-old Sean-Edward Varner, a second-grader at Valley View elementary, is proof that you are never too young to consider future career choices.

Americans attend mandatory public schooling for only 13 years of their lives — for the average person that’s less than one-fifth of their existence. The rest is spent in a career of their choosing, which is precisely why schools need to address career options early and often.

While thinking and learning about different careers is good at the elementary level, by the time students reach middle school they should have time to not only explore opportunities, but also to find out more about the jobs they think interests them.
