Montana cuts to eliminate education grants

In an effort to comply with Governor Brian Schweitzer’s request that state agencies cut their general fund budgets by five percent, the Montana Office of Public Instruction (OPI) has submitted a set of proposals that include the elimination of $2.1 million in School District Block Grants.

If OPI’s proposal is accepted by the Governor, the Lewistown School District stands to lose a portion of the $506,760 it receives biennially from the state to help support its general, transportation and flexibility funds. By law, a percentage of what would be lost under the OPI proposal will have to be made up by local taxpayers – likely without a corresponding reduction in their state taxes.
