MWED Feb. 2010 Newsletter – MWED and FVCC Partner on Target Industry Research

Our goal at Montana West and Flathead County Economic Development Authority is to increase the Flathead’s visibility as a great location for business to grow in situations where quality of life is an important factor to the founders.

In times such as these economic development marketing and promotion are crucial to the overall community health. Montana West has a list of basic services we provide to the entrepreneur, company representatives seeking new locations, and our partners; but the area’s marketing message has not been thoroughly crafted, yet.

Montana West is considering engaging experienced economic development expertise to assist us in the formation of a long term marketing strategy to leverage achieve goals. Just like the creation of a marketing message is critical to any business or organization, it is also critical to an economic region. An effective marketing strategy and plan is constructed from the local knowledge, perceptions, and desires of those participating the planning process.

Research is underway and being directed by Dr. Brad Eldredge of Flathead Valley Community College. The data Dr. Eldredge is collecting will tell a story about what the emerging industries are for our area, what businesses “fit” the Flathead and which businesses have the better opportunity to be successful. The next component is identifying the basic and value-added needs of those industry sectors and matching area resources to support and improve those needs. A marketing message per industry sector and marketing plan are then devised to exploit the local opportunities.

We will present and discuss the proposal at the next Montana West Economic Development board meeting, February 17th at noon at Glacier Bank, Kalispell. Lunch is provided.
