Media Arts in the Public Schools (MAPS) and Trapper Creek Job Corp Team Up to Teach Film Making to At Risk Youth

MAPS http://mediarts.org is pleased to announce that 9 Trapper Creek Job Corp students have enrolled in the film program. These new filmmakers began January 25th and are committed to a ten week course of study.

Job Corps is the nation’s largest residential education and vocational training program for the economically disadvantaged, under-served and at risk youth. Students complete the program with industry certifications and acquire a GED or High School diploma. Job Corps also provides placement and transitional services when students graduate from the program.

Says TCJC Director, Linda Guzik: “It is critical that we provide positive learning opportunities for students during the extended training day. MAPS allows our students to experience a unique industry that taps into their creative thinking skills. We are thankful to Peter Rosten and his staff for partnering with us in this exciting adventure“.

MAPS provides a safe, consistent and respectful environment for our students and this encourages student creativity and productivity. The curriculum includes filmmaking, commercial production, website development, graphics, documentaries, media literacy and combines creative expression with hands-on technical training.

Says MAPS President & Teacher, Peter Rosten: “Like the real world of business, high performing MAPS students receive monetary rewards their effort. And our new students definitely have a great work ethic.”

MAPS is a unique public/private partnership and derives its funding from client fees, grants and public support. Recent community support includes donations from The Jake Rowley Memorial Scholarship Fund, The Scripps-Howard Foundation, The Rapp Family Foundation and Glaxo-Smith-Kline.

Here’s what some of the Job Corp participants have to say:

-Dany Wilfred:"I believe this is a wonderful opportunity for Job Corps students to further explore career opportunities."

-Rachel Toupin: " When I first heard about this opportunity I was so excited to be apart of it. Things like this don’t come along every day."

-Kaylee Alamaa- "I couldn’t be more excited about this opportunity. I’ve always been interested in how movies were made; now I get to make my own!!! NICE!"
