Jim Harkins knows an exceptional science student when he sees one.
Harkins, a Big Sky High science teacher, saw the seeds of brilliance early in seniors Katie Michels and Rodolfo Villareal-Calderon.
"With kids like this, it's really holding them back to keep them here at school all the time," said Harkins. "That's why I try to get them involved in labs at the university."
That nurturing of the young scientists paid off recently when Michels and Villareal-Calderon were selected as national semifinalists in a national science competition sponsored by Intel http://www.intel.com/education/sts/ .
The contest is huge, drawing 1,700 entries from around the country.
"Just the application process for this contest is grueling, so for them to be picked is very, very impressive," Harkins said. "They're called the mini-Nobels for a good reason."
