Jonathan Weber leaves NewWest for new opportunity in San Francisco

Jonathan Weber knows from starting new media businesses. The newly named editor-in-chief of the $5 million, Warren Hellman-funded Bay Area News Project has spent the past four years building a Missoula-based, multi-platform, multi-revenue stream media network covering local news in the region west of the Rockie, called New West http://www.newwest.net/. Before that, he was founder and editor-in-chief of the weekly magazine Industry Standard, which chronicled the Silicon Valley boom and bust.

Weber spoke with BayNewser today about what attracted him to the new gig, what he learned at New West, what kind of people they’re looking for for the 15 positions they plan to fill by the end of the year, and whether the San Francisco Chronicle should be worried.

BayNewser: You have a good thing going out in Montana. Why give it up?

It is a very interesting venture, and they have recruited me to be the editor in chief of the project. The news about all this is being released today, and I expect you will read more about it in the future.
