Six States to Develop Policies to Fight High School Dropout, Achieve Graduation for All

NGA Center Selects States to Participate in New Initiative Aimed at Increasing State High School Graduation Rates

Despite recent high school reform efforts, the dropout problem in the United States remains daunting. To address this troubling issue that affects all states, the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices (NGA Center) today announced it has selected six states – Colorado, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, Tennessee and West Virginia – to develop comprehensive state dropout prevention and recovery policies through the State Strategies to Achieve Graduation for All initiative.

The initiative will help states clearly identify their dropout problem; assess the gaps in student supports for preventing students from dropping out of school and recovering the students that drop out; and create a dropout prevention and recovery action plan for implementation that includes tactics such as state policies, executive orders, advisory councils, legislation or regulatory reforms.

‘Graduation Matters Missoula’ Campaign launches Tuesday, Jan. 19

A news conference and rally on Tuesday, Jan. 19, from 10:30-11:30 a.m. will formally launch “Graduation Matters Missoula,” a community-wide effort to improve the high-school graduation rate.

The event will be held in the 3rd Floor Atrium of the Phyllis J. Washington Education Center on the campus of the University of Montana.

Missoula County Public Schools has been working with community leaders from a wide variety of local organizations to develop a lasting campaign to encourage students to stay in school through graduation. Graduation Matters Missoula is being developed by volunteer teams comprising school district personnel, including administrators, teachers and principals; parents, students, the business community, nonprofit partners, the University of Montana, The Rotary Club of Missoula, and the faith community.
