110-year old Boulder, Montana School for the Deaf and Blind campus could become a full-fledged school for the culinary arts

Portions of the old campus haven’t changed much from when the state shuttered this school for the deaf and blind more than 70 years ago.

Most of the buildings remain empty, and pigeons, not people, are more inclined to occupy the rooms.

But a local developer who is negotiating the purchase of the property, along with a handful of interested parties that include UM-Helena and the Jefferson Local Development Corporation, see hidden potential in the 110-year old campus and what remains of its historic structures.

If their plan to renovate and further develop the grounds gains momentum — not to mention the needed money — the 22-acre complex could become a full-fledged school for the culinary arts, offering programs that include cheese making, meat cutting, and crafting wine and beer.

“I’m not looking at this as a huge money-making project,” said Blair Williams, a local developer who is working to purchase the property. It’s bigger than that.”
