New Montana State University President Cruzado plans state listening tours

"I’m a firm believer the entire state is our campus," she said, "because we are a land-grant university."

Waded Cruzado had been on the job in the president’s office at Montana State University less than a day, but already she was starting to sound like a Montanan.

"Finally," Cruzado said Monday, flashing her trademark smile, "we’re getting some fresh snow today."

Cruzado, 49, had just left the warmer climates of New Mexico State University and her family’s home in Puerto Rico to begin her new job as MSU’s 12th president. She replaces Geoff Gamble, who retired after nine years.

She also is scheduling "listening sessions" around the state, starting with MSU’s sister campuses in Billings, Havre and Great Falls. She said she wants to "sit down and honestly listen" to what people both on the campuses and in the larger communities think of the university now and what they’d like it to be in five years.
