Schools focus, improve

Struggling schools improved with attention and focus from the Natrona County School District.

The academic recognition and support program, in its third year, evaluates elementary and middle schools in reading, language arts and math, using scores from the Northwest Education Association growth tests and Proficiency Assessments for Wyoming Students. A panel of teachers and administrators judges the data, and schools are identified as "excelling" if they performed better than the state average at most grade levels, growth is high and improvement is better than average.

Schools receive "support" if data show less than satisfactory results in any one area, which is designated a "focus" area for improvement. The district provides extra support such as additional reviews and goal-setting meetings to bring focus areas up to a satisfactory level.

"The idea is to provide some additional resources and support for the school so they can improve their performance," said Mike Bond, executive director of curriculum and instruction.
