Working with words: Funds help Writing Coaches of Missoula program expand into more Missoula schools

To the praise of students and teachers alike, a program that mentors young writers has expanded to the middle schools.

Based at Hellgate High School, Writing Coaches of Missoula http://www.umt.edu/studentjobsapp/ViewJob.asp?id=7799 teams up students with adult professionals for one-on-one language instruction. This school year, the coaches began working in more schools and are receiving funding from Missoula County Public Schools for the first time.

"They nail the kids for all their mistakes in a caring, gentle way," said Kim Butler, a Meadow Hill Middle School language arts teacher whose seventh-graders participate in the writing clinics.

This year, Meadow Hill and Washington middle schools are new to the program, as is Big Sky High School. A part-time coordinator runs the operation, screening and scheduling some 50 volunteer coaches. The program costs about $15,000, and this year, the district is contributing $6,000. The rest of the money comes in through donations.
