Nobel Peace Prize Winner and University of Montana climate change specialist, Dr. Steven Running urges Montana not to develop coal deposits

Steve Running, the University of Montana climate change specialist http://www.ntsg.umt.edu/ who shared in the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize, didn’t mince words Tuesday in describing the importance of the decision whether to lease millions of tons of state coal for possible development.

"Are we going to burn another billion tons of coal, or aren’t we?" he told two members of the state Land Board, which may decide Dec. 21 whether to lease 572 million tons of coal in southeastern Montana’s Otter Creek Valley.

"That, to me, is where all this global theory (on climate change) comes right back down to this kind of decision-making," he continued. "Here we are in Montana making a real-life decision that is exactly this decision multiplied worldwide.
