I’m Fed Up With Razor Blades

I’m feeling the downside of the razor/razorblade product model. To be fair, I never liked the original incarnation of this product model – Gillette. Look at Gillette razor pricing these days. Sure, the handles are very expensive but now the blades are as well. We’ve been led to believe that if you buy the razor you will save by only having to buy the blades. But current pricing says you pay about $20 for the Fusion handle and $2.00 for each disposable blade. Gillette’s logic only holds if you price products with some relation to costs. I go through a blade about every five days (and no, I don’t shave my legs) so that’s six blades per month or $12 plus the handle. Amortized over the year, that’s $164 for shaving equipment each year. Of course, no man has just one shaving handle – you have several so the price – just for hardware each year – is pushing $200.
