Montana education leaders doing important work

There is much to be thankful for this November. I recently visited Williamsburg, Va., and Washington, D.C. One cannot visit those places without taking pride in the accomplishments of our country. The Virginia Legislature first met in 1619 and launched the American journey of self-governance. Although the privileges and responsibilities of citizenship were limited, the story of this country is fundamentally about the struggle to expand citizenship to all adults. I recommend a visit to the Library of Congress, where you can follow the drafting process of the Constitution on an interactive computer and screen. The concepts debated by James Madison and Alexander Hamilton are as relevant today as they were in 1787.

A recent story in the Missoulian, however, would be a shock to the founders of our country. The article reported that 75 percent of the age group 17-25 is unfit to serve in the military. Among the reasons cited for this alarming statistic is the high dropout rate in our high schools.
