Transtech Data Center opens new era in data management in Montana

Michael Unquera, general manager of the new Transtech Data Center, says he didn’t fit the mold of a computer whiz kid who wrote code and designed Web sites by the time he was barely out of diapers. Growing up, ski racing was his passion.

But computers became a driving force as Unquera began contemplating careers. He majored in computer science at Rocky Mountain College and even built the first computer that he took to Rocky as a freshman in 2000.

After graduating from Rocky, Unquera earned a master’s degree in information assurance from Norwich University in Vermont. The program trains professionals who specialize in protecting and defending information systems and data from natural and man-made threats. The Norwich program has been recognized by the National Security Administration and the Department of Homeland Security as a center of academic excellence in information assurance.

While completing the master’s program, Unquera interacted with students who worked in the movie industry and at major software firms.

Now, back in Billings, the 27-year-old sees a bright future for the data center industry in Montana.
