Economic downturn creating a new wave of entrepreneurs

As legions of pink-slipped workers in Silicon Valley and beyond struggle with job hunts that have now dragged on for a year or more, many are using their free time to get in touch with their "inner entrepreneur." The Bay Area may be littered these days with recession road kill, but it’s also become a teeming incubator for the newly jobless daring to dream big.

"Unemployment is custom-made for starting a new venture," says Chris Gill, president of the Silicon Valley Association of Startup Entrepreneurs. "You’ve got the time, and if you’ve got the passion, you can start a business. And while only 50 percent of them survive five years, if you’re lucky the money can start to add up."
