After-school activities in rural Montana communities amplify academics

In small schools like Highwood and Centerville, where they’re close to Great Falls, but just far enough away, students are getting opportunities they might not otherwise be afforded through afterschool programs.
"I like to think of it as leveling the playing field," said Peggy Perry, afterschool program coordinator at Centerville schools. "Part of it is economics, part of it is distance."
In 2003, Centerville received funding from the state Office of Public Instruction through a 21st Century Learning grant to provide after-school programming based on the high percentage of low-income students in the school.
