La Cense Ranch of Dillon, Montana first to receive stringent USDA "grass fed" certification

A couple thousand cattle south of Dillon are living off the land — and nothing else.

The cattle, which belong to La Cense Ranch http://www.lacensebeef.com/ , are the first in the country to receive a stringent "grass fed" certification recently instituted by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).

The USDA launched the standard as a way to verify companies that claim that their cattle are 100 percent grass fed actually are. To be certified, cattle can consume only grass and forage throughout their lifetime, with the exception of milk prior to weaning. They cannot be fed any grain and must have continuous access to pasture.
