Twitter, meet Second Life – YouTube videos viewed 1 billion times a day

The Silicon Valley cycle of hype is getting cranked up again.

How else to explain the absurd $1 billion valuation being bestowed on Twitter in all its pre-revenue glory? But reader beware: The cycle of hype is a fickle thing. It has a short attention span and no loyalty.

Just ask the folks behind Second Life.

A couple of years ago, Second Life was everywhere. You loved it. You hated it. But everyone was talking about the fascinating virtual world created by San Francisco-based Linden Lab.

And then "… poof! Nothing. Second Life dropped off the radar, for reasons that aren’t entirely clear. And the valley moved on to buzzing about Facebook. And Twitter. And everything Web 2.0.

YouTube http://www.youtube.com/ CEO and co-founder Chad Hurley marked the third anniversary of his company’s $1.65 billion acquisition by Mountain View Internet giant Google by noting that videos are viewed on the site 1 billion times a day.
