Celestial Seasonings turns 40 – Herbal tea company made health food mainstream, spawned Boulder’s natural foods industry

Celestial Seasonings http://www.celestialseasonings.com/ in 1969 was 10,000 cloth bags of bulk herbal tea made from plants hand-picked in the Rocky Mountains, sold in natural foods stores in Boulder.

Celestial Seasonings in 2009 is 1.6 billion cups of tea a year, more than $93 million in sales, made from herbs and teas grown in 35 countries, part of a multinational conglomerate of natural foods products called the Hain Celestial Group.

For founder Mo Siegel, the only surprise is that it took so long.

"What it took 35 years to do, I thought we would do in 10 years," he said.
