Monday, October 12th features four pre-conference tours. One will visit Butte, for a look at that city’s remarkably architectural heritage. A second will offer a close look at conservation development in Central Idaho, including an overnight stay at the Blackhawk on the River development. A third will feature Missoula’s green commercial and infill projects. The fourth is a walking tour of redevelopment in downtown Missoula, led by Missoula Mayor John Engen.

The conference formally kicks off Monday afternoon with the keynote address from renowned economist Chris Thornberg, who returns this year to offer his analysis of the current state of the markets in the Northern Rockies and what we might expect over the next 18 months. At the first NewWest.Net Real Estate and Development in the Northern Rockies conference in 2006, Thornberg predicted a dramatic downturn in real estate across the country – long before most economists and industry analysts saw what was coming. A dynamic speaker and prescient economist, Thornberg’s talk will be a must-see. The session will conclude with the conference opening reception and networking social, sponsored by First Security Bank.

Tuesday, October 13th is a full-day program, with multi-track discussions and presentations focusing on:

* Practical tips on sustainable design and energy efficiency for buildings, and place-based landscapes.

* Analysis of the resort and specialty housing markets

* Sam Byrne, one of the nation’s savviest real estate investors and the new owner of the Yellowstone Club, will discuss the future of the luxury resort business.

* Luther Propst, Executive Director of the Sonoran Institute, will discuss the economic benefits of land conservation.

* Discussion of the preservation and evolution of rural towns, including examples of innovative small-town developments.

* Presentations on legislative public policy and land use law in Montana, and what to look for in the next legislative session.

Also new this year is a special guest performance by Missoula native and country music star Shane Clouse and Missoula’s favorite local musician Tom Catmull. The concert will finish the conference with a bang at the closing reception Tuesday, August 13, sponsored by WGM Group.
