Idaho National Laboratory launches Facebook page

IDAHO FALLS — Idaho National Laboratory continues to expand its use of social media by launching a new Facebook page today (http://www.facebook.com/IdahoNationalLaboratory). The page allows for easy interaction between INL and Facebook users. It contains video interviews with researchers and recent interns, photos of life at the lab and in Idaho Falls, news coverage, feature stories, career information, INL podcasts, and other areas that will allow for more interaction.

The benefits to INL will include increased collaboration with targeted audiences and higher levels of public engagement as INL uses the power of social networks to reach out to individuals.

"This site will allow INL to reach science-attentive, career-oriented individuals from across the country who utilize the latest technology to interact," said Mark Holubar, INL Human Resources & Diversity director. "Facebook offers a benefit in recruiting and retaining the next generation of scientists and engineers at INL."

Facebook is the most-used social network with more than 200 million active users worldwide.

"We are launching this Facebook page so that we can actively engage a new audience in a dialogue about INL’s mission of ensuring our nation’s energy security," said Brent Stacey, INL chief information officer. "There are numerous benefits to INL’s long-term strategy that are realized through interacting individually with the larger Internet community."

Energy Secretary Steven Chu recently launched his Facebook page, as have other national laboratories and government agencies. INL has previously launched a YouTube channel and a Flickr site.

INL is one of the DOE’s 10 multiprogram national laboratories. The laboratory performs work in each of the strategic goal areas of DOE: energy, national security, science and environment. INL is the nation’s leading center for nuclear energy research and development. Day-to-day management and operation of the laboratory is the responsibility of Battelle Energy Alliance.
