Montana needs cure for doctor shortage
It seems the entire nation is focused on health care reform, and Montana is no exception. Montana Sen. Max Baucus, as chairman of the Senate Finance Committee and one of the key players in the health reform debate, is getting an earful from Montanans of all walks of life.
But there is another crucial health care discussion that warrants the attention of Montanans, and especially our state leaders. Montana needs to get serious about addressing its shrinking number of primary care doctors.
As Missoulian State Bureau reporter Mike Dennison reported last week, private family doctors are being driven from their profession by financial concerns or retiring, and fewer medical students are willing to commit themselves to a career with such long hours and diminishing returns. It takes a lot of money to run a private practice, and a lot of energy to spend a day seeing patients, and then turn around and deal with insurance and liability issues.
