Staves to stools – Vinoture, a Missoula business building premier furniture out of recycled wine barrels.

In the backyard shop of Jeremy Smith’s house on Cooper Street, a homegrown Missoula furniture business, Vinoture http://vinoture.com/ is finding its legs in an unusual medium: wine barrel wood.

Reconstituted under Smith’s artistic hand and vision, the premium oak staves are transformed into lustrous, unique tables and chairs from wood that once served to age bordeaux or cabernet sauvignon from around the Inland Northwest.

What is no longer useful to regional vintners is an endless source of inspiration for longtime woodworkers like Smith, who value the high-grade material and its unique history.
“You just can’t recreate a look of this wood,” said Smith, proving his point as he lifted the rusted metal hoops that held a barrel together.
