Headwaters Floating Island, a Montana company donates floating islands that fight polution to Denver parks.

Something new was added to the water in Washington Park’s Smith Lake on Tuesday: islands.

A group of volunteers and city workers launched four artificial islands made from recycled plastic bottles, foam, sod and plants into the Denver lake.

The islands, called "biohavens," are meant to simulate wetlands by providing food and shelter for insects, fish, birds and turtles. They also might make the lake’s water a little cleaner.

"There’s no habitat on the lake; it’s barren, so we’re going to stick a habitat out there and see what happens," said Karen Hardesty, watchable-wildlife coordinator for the Colorado Division of Wildlife, who organized the project.
