Build Your Own Solar Powered Vehicle for $15K

Free Drive Electric Vehicles announced today the release of “THE SOLAR BUG” electric vehicle kit. This do it yourself kit is the first to allow anyone with minimal mechanical skills to build their own street legal, all-electric vehicle that is powered by the sun.

Free Drive EV President Steve Titus said The Solar Bug will generate up to 200 watts of electricity from a roof-mounted Sanyo solar panel, providing miles of zero emission driving range each day. Titus’s company, based in Bozeman, Montana, has been perfecting the kit over the past five years.

On sunny days, The Solar Bug can be driven for 5 – 10 miles on solar power alone. On cloudy days the “Bug” can be plugged in to a standard 110V wall outlet, thereby extending the range to 20 to 30 miles between charges.

The fun and exotic design of the vehicle turns heads wherever it rolls. With its motorcycle seating and handlebars, big wheels, soft plastic windows and energy generating roof, the Bug resembles a cartoonish dune buggy that Elroy Jetson might have zoomed around in.

The kit includes everything needed to build a working vehicle: PG Drive controller, Delta Q battery charger, 8HP electric motor, fiberglass body with a DOT approved windshield and other parts. And unlike many toys, batteries are included. If needed, web support is available.

The kits are designed for easy assemble by any mechanically inclined person. Instructions included allow the owner to fine tune the performance characteristics.
The Solar Bug can be titled and registered as a Low Speed Vehicle (LSV) in most states and the first kit has successfully been registered in Montana. Each kit includes a DOT conforming Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and all required documentation for titling and registration.

The MSRP for The Solar Bug kit is $15,000 plus delivery from Bozeman. Assembly services are available for those who think they might need a little extra help.
