Ryanair adds fee just to check-in (What’s next…a fee for breathing during flight?)

Ryanair is again leading the way in introducing new airline fees. The latest? The airline says it will begin charging a £5 (about $7.50) fee for printing out your own boarding pass. But, is it even a fee if there’s no way around it? The Times of London points out that since Ryanair will "scrap airport check-in desks and move to 100%web check-in," that means the new fee is "compulsory."

And what if you can’t find a computer to check-in prior to arriving at the airport? Then, the Times explains, you will "face a £40 ($61) charge at the airport for turning up without a boarding pass." That fee also applies if you check-in online but lose your printed-out boarding pass before getting to the airport, according to The Irish Times.

Air Jamaica: A second bag costs $25, but it won’t be on your flight

Travelers frustrated with the new checked-baggage fees at U.S. airlines had better hope their carriers don’t follow the lead of Air Jamaica. In a policy that will apply to Air Jamaica’s New York-Grenada and New York-Barbados routes, the airline will allow customers to check one bag for free but will charge $25 for a second bag. The kicker? After a passenger’s free first bag, Air Jamaica says each additional bag "will be transported within seven days, and must be collected from the airport."
