Bitterroot’s Janine Benyus honored by the United Nations for environmental work

Bitterroot resident Janine Benyus was honored by the United Nations on Wednesday in Paris as one of six innovators from around the world who were named as the UN Environment Programme’s (UNEP) 2009 Champions of the Earth.

The award recognizes a range of talents, including Benyus, who has sparked positive environmental change with her nature-inspired solutions for man-made problems, and an individual who leads a anti-poverty organization from Africa, according to a UN press release.

Benyus joins this year’s winners who include: Norwegian Environment Minister Erik Solheim; tropical forest and climate campaigner Kevin Conrad; photographic and public awareness pioneer Yann Arthus-Bertrand; wind power entrepreneur Tulsi Tanti; recycling innovator Ron Gonen; and the youth-empowering Ethiopian organization Tena Kebena.
