Clear skies ahead for rural air service?

The patchwork system of subsidized air service serving Montana and other rural states is getting a fresh look.

In his budget, President Barack Obama says the 31-year-old system is inefficient and needs an overhaul. The question is how.

President George W. Bush proposed cuts that Congress ultimately rejected. This time, more than 100 communities in 34 states and Puerto Rico that get Essential Air Service — and the small-market airlines that receive a federal subsidy to provide it — are hoping Obama opts for a different approach.
