Butte’s supercomputer

In the basement of the Thornton Building, a supercomputer called Big Sky whirs loudly amidst a jungle of wires and cables.

For Earl Dodd, a strategist and business development executive for IBM, Big Sky represents "the sandbox" for a new business model in high performance computing of which Butte will be the hub.

The equipment housed in the Uptown Butte building has about 3.8 teraflops of computing power and is the size of two refrigerators.
