University of Montana researchers tackle asbestos in Montana

Bear Paw Development Corporation is a private non-profit organization created for the purpose of administering programs to help improve regional economic conditions in Hill, Blaine, Liberty, Chouteau and Phillips Counties and the Fort Belknap and Rocky Boy's Indian Reservations.

While the landmark W.R. Grace trial continues just a mile from University of Montana laboratories, professors are researching the lethal substance and its effects on Montana.

“It’s an important issue for our state; it’s not just Libby,” said Elizabeth Putnam, UM associate professor in the Center for Environmental Health Sciences who is researching Libby asbestos. “It’s been transported across the state. It’s more than just the fibrosis and the cancer; there are a lot of different diseases that can result from this (asbestos). That’s why it’s important to study.”
