No guarantees on future air service

Persistent rumor: Delta cannot pull out of Butte because the federal government requires airlines to provide "essential air service" to rural areas.

After hearing this time and again, we decided to investigate, in light of the fact that only about half the readers in a recent unscientific poll said they typically fly in and out of the Butte airport. The rest said they travel to other Montana airports to take advantage of lower fares.

If you think airport patronage doesn’t matter because of this supposed federal protection, think again. Regulations would prevent Delta Airlines from pulling out on short notice, but there is no law to stop the company from making a business decision to leave.
