The Utah Science Technology and Research Initiative http://www.innovationutah.com/ (USTAR) is paying off in a big way for Utah. The University of Utah http://www.utah.edu (the U of U) and Headwaters Incorporated http://www.headwaters.com/ (NYSE: HW) have entered into a joint venture to offer carbon management services to CO2-emitting companies, from carbon storage engineering to risk and liability management. While global concerns about the effects of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions are reaching a tipping point, many experts believe CO2 storage is one of the best ways to significantly decrease CO2 emissions without adversely impacting our standard of living.

Utah as host to a cluster of new coal-fired power plants is not exactly the vision for a new economy based on clean energy. But the first business venture spun out of the state’s 3-year-old science and technology initiative might mean exactly that, with a twist.

The plants clustered in Carbon County would not emit carbon dioxide, the gas from burning fossil fuels that causes global warming. That’s because the carbon dioxide would be captured and pumped underground where it would be kept permanently in a kind of global warming jail.
