Montana Tourism industry targets neighbors

"Montana has more spectacular, unspoiled destinations than anywhere else in the lower 48 states," "Montana has charming small towns that serve as gateways," and "Montana, breathtaking experience by day and relaxing hospitality by night."

The state’s travel industry leaders say they now know the gasoline price tipping point that will cause consumers to alter their travel and vacation plans.

"Once gasoline prices get to around $4 a gallon, people will cut back," said Norma Nickerson, director of Montana’s Institute for Tourism and Recreation Research.

Last July, the average price of a gallon of regular unleaded was $4.11, a record high. Consumers cut back on travel at that point, decreasing their use of gasoline by 5 percent nationwide. They took fewer trips to the grocery store and parked their vehicles more often.
